Jon this is another task that it would be great for you to take a look at and come up with some options for budget and timeline. It would help with security if we could door off the bottom floor from the 2nd floor.

The issue with a gate is it would only keep an honest man out. With the entire stairway exposed to the downstairs someone could eailiy hop the railing and be on their way. 

A gate definetly is the most cost effective option but doesn't add any real security. 

The best option would be to add two doors at the top of the stairway and create a landing (see attached pictures). 

We could elect to keep the KITCHEN an open space all of the time and reuse those doors for these two locations. 

Rough estimate reusing kitchen doors: $800.00 for both doors. 

Lets discuss what we may want to do and I can firm up the numbers on it.
