Talk directly with to get all hackerspace/makerspaces listed as venues, and maybe do a donated ad campaign to the organizers; geo targeted ads

Ethan Chew/Spacefelix Comment 1/18/12: Several groups working in Makers Local 256 have avoided this issue as we post to meetup as ‘The Robotics Club’ or whatever the name of the group is, but name Makers Local 256 as a sponsor and/or the location of the meetup.  We still get a public front, get to blurb Makers Local 256 in the group’s description and avoid being regulated.  An active example of this is the Huntsville Open Manufacturing Meetup run by strages (

  • small core group has been meeting in public space for the past year and a half

Tips to getting sponsorships:
- go in with another group/organization
- easier to get money for events/projects vs operating expenses
- do small things that work, so you can measure that over time; use those events to build up to larger events
- avoid burnout of your team by hosting lots of large events over a short period of time

Example of small events as kindling leading to large events:
Monthly meetup builds up to annual unconference
Same thing can be done with photography meetups ( or drawing/visualization (

The notebook section provides a way for you to store and share information with your group members. With the book feature you can:

  • Add book pages and organize them hierarchically into different books.
  • Attach files to pages to share them with others.
  • Track changes that others have made and revert changes as necessary.
  • Archive books that are no longer of interest to the group. Archived books can be reactivated later if needed.
