Initial Outreach - Explaining Makers

One of the earliest, and ongoing activities of a maker space (of any sort), is explaining what we are/do to the larger community/world.

Do you know of some good explainations? Presentations, Videos?

this short film is pretty good.  There are others ... http://wearemakers.org/

Part of this is giving people a way to find out more.  A list of resources in the presentation, handouts, your website, pointers to shared websites is highly desireable.  What are your favorite resources to point people at?

Jigsaw's core members are people who are always around. But the board are people who hold the vision, aren't around as much.

Noisebridge operates on consensus, run by people who are always on the ground. Everything is really slow because everyone wants to make their opinion known. All operational decisions are based on do-acracy. A lot of people have problems addressing issues. You need a dissenter in your space.

Noisebridge - as someone who is outside and looks in, but tightly affiliated. Be crisp, be understandable if you want to be accessible. Pick which you are, know it, stay it, communicate that as well.

How people describe their space to others / Mission Statements

Dave - wiki entry blurb we all agree we don't like. "Come here and do stuff" doesn't give clear idea of who or what the stuff is.

We have the documents but it's posters, it's pictures. Put it on the wall, then when someone comes in. Signage for welcoming message.

Noisebridge gives keys. Everyone is welcome. That's the message.

Not sure if we actually need a mission statement or not.

James and I spoke at #CCCamp11 in August near Berlin, Germany. It was a blast, and we ended up having two informal gatherings for hacker/makerspace founders and facilitators.

The general list of concerns/ideas was long, but we ended up focusing on a few things:
